Forced to flee Bosnia when he was a child, Irvin returns to his homeland. In the same woods where thirty years earlier people took refuge, he decides to build a small village with his own hands. To restore dignity to this place and to the people who died in the war, to heal his wounds, and to fulfill his desire for redemption. But when he is on the River Drina, Irvin does not stop trying to discover what happened, and what could still happen.

The two Zurich photographers Cortis & Sonderegger meticulously recreate iconic images from international photographic history. They then photograph these artful bricolages along with the tools and materials used to create them. In this documentary, the two give insight into their way of working and thinking. And they explain why they are not a bit afraid of illustration programs that are becoming more and more sophisticated and of AI.

Some thirty children aged between four and eight spend their days in the woods, come sun, rain or snow. This is where they learn to read, write and count. Above all, the children experience this environment and the cycles of nature to the full, and seek their role in the community. The film plunges us into the world of a forest school over the course of a year, giving a voice to its young protagonists.

Black dust, shrill metallic noises, dark tunnels, muscular bodies – all that is the past. At the end of 2018, extraction of coal throughout Germany came to an end. That same year, the voices of the emerging climate protest movement Fridays for Future grew louder. Against the backdrop of these media and socio-political events, the film ONCE WE WERE PITMEN follows five miners on their tragic, humorous and heartwarming search for a new role in life.
